Unshelved is sponsored this week by Maria Semple, author of This One is Mine. I just finished this book last night, and here are a few personal highlights:
- The author is a former writer for Arrested Development, one of my all-time favorite TV shows
- The author left L.A. to live in an island near my home of Seattle
- The main character (a retired TV writer, natch) drives around L.A. listening to the works of Stephen Sondheim, my all-time favorite songwriter
- Since this books takes place in L.A. there are the federally-mandated minimum number of scenes with shopping, sex, and celebrity sightings
- But there are also insightful chapters about child rearing, neurological dysfunctions, and forgiveness
- It's funny and true and sometimes very surprising.
I liked it.
